Hayden Square was a watershed project for downtown Tempe. The seven-acre, mixed-use complex, containing residential, office, retail, restaurant, nightlife and historic elements, gave impetus to the renaissance of Mill Avenue.

Knoell & Quidort created the competition-winning master plan in association with Siefer Associates, designed the innovative condominiums and plaza atop the 600-car parking structure, and collaborated with Kober Associates, commissioned to design the commercial facilities.

"In the early '80's the design and development of the Hayden Square mixed-use project provided the catalyst to jump start what has been a three decades effort that has made Downtown Tempe Arizona one of the premier southwest urban spaces, with an authentic sense of place. The design excitement, sensitivity and understanding of the historic context and the professional coordination of the design team provided by Knoell & Quidort were the key to this successful project."—Dave Fackler, City of Tempe Development Services Manager, 1978-2003
