| The home is constructed over an old campsite between a desert arroyo and a large drainage basin. Adult areas are located upstairs to capture views. Children are downstairs near the kitchen and family room. Deep recesses and large overhangs protect interiors from the sun. Natural light from the roof gables and clerestories make electric lighting unnecessary during daytime. Natural ventilation takes advantage of the breezes produced by the topography and microclimate. The sequence of roof shapes reveals the distinct uses of the upstairs, recalls the tent-shaded rooftop sleeping porches in the era of the old campsite and makes a connection with the surrounding mountains. |
