The new home restores a previously damaged site and enhances the unique qualities of the setting. The couple was moving from Boston to Phoenix and wanted their new home to celebrate the change. They wanted to spend time outdoors, enjoy the climate, the desert environment and the views. They preferred an open plan that allowed the main social spaces to relate to each other and to the outside. A separate guesthouse would welcome visiting grown children and grandchildren. The butterfly shape collects rainwater so it does not flood the small, contained patios. The long steel beam that supports the center of the roof becomes a fountain when it rains. Catch basins at each end of the scupper release the water back to the desert.
